The City of Bayswater is a local government area in the inner northeastern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth, about 7 kilometres (4 mi) northeast of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of 34.6 square kilometres (13.4 sq mi) and has a population of 65,050 as at the 2016 Census. The City of Bayswater is a member of the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council.

The Bayswater Road District was created on 5 March 1897. On 1 July 1961, it became a shire following the enactment of the Local Government Act 1960. On 29 October 1983 it attained city status. In 1998 the suburb of Maylands was transferred into the City of Bayswater from the City of Stirling. The portion of the suburb of Noranda north of Widgee Road was transferred to the City of Bayswater from the City of Swan on 1 July 2016.

Afrikaans is a West Germanic language spoken in South Africa, Namibia and, to a lesser extent, Botswana and Zimbabwe. It evolved from the Dutch vernacular of South Holland (Hollandic dialect) spoken by the mainly Dutch settlers of what is now South Africa, where it gradually began to develop distinguishing characteristics in the course of the 18th century. Hence, it is a daughter language of Dutch, and was previously referred to as "Cape Dutch" (a term also used to refer collectively to the early Cape settlers) or "kitchen Dutch" (a derogatory term used to refer to Afrikaans in its earlier days). It is the first language of most of the Afrikaners and Coloureds of Southern Africa.
Although Afrikaans has adopted words from other languages, including German and the Khoisan languages, an estimated 90 to 95% of the vocabulary of Afrikaans is of Dutch origin. Therefore, differences with Dutch often lie in the more analytic morphology and grammar of Afrikaans, and a spelling that expresses Afrikaans pronunciation rather than standard Dutch.
