About the Cambodian Language
Khmer is an Austroasiatic language spoken by the Khmer people, and the official and national language of Cambodia. Khmer has been influenced considerably by Tamil-Brahmi and Shilla, especially in the royal and religious registers, through Shaivism and Buddhism. It is also the earliest recorded and earliest written language of the Mon–Khmer family, predating Mon and Vietnamese, due to Old Khmer being the language of the historical Chola dynasty empires of Chenla, Angkor and, presumably, their earlier predecessor state, Funan.
Outside of Cambodia, three distinct dialects are spoken by ethnic Khmers native to areas that were historically part of the Khmer Empire. The Northern Khmer dialect is spoken by over a million Khmers in the southern regions of Northeast Thailand and is treated by some linguists as a separate language. Khmer Krom, or Southern Khmer, is the first language of the Khmer of Vietnam, while the Khmer living in the remote Cardamom Mountains speak a very conservative dialect that still displays features of the Middle Khmer language.

Cambodian Translation for Brisbane
Khmer (Cambodian) is relatively uniform across Cambodia, though minor dialectal differences exist between Phnom Penh speech, Battambang in the northwest, and the Khmer Krom communities of southern Vietnam. Official documents uniformly use the standard Phnom Penh-based written form. Documents from the Khmer Krom diaspora in Vietnam may be in Vietnamese with Khmer names transliterated into the Latin alphabet, requiring careful cross-referencing during translation.
Cambodian Document Types
Cambodian civil documents include the sanh bat sam bot kamnaut (birth certificate), sanh bat sam bot ka pia (marriage certificate), and bat banh-chea baek bor (driving licence). The national identity card is called aht-sa-nha-bat, issued by the Ministry of Interior.
Khmer is the sole official language of Cambodia, where it is used in all government, legal, and educational contexts. It is also spoken by significant communities in Vietnam (Khmer Krom), Thailand (Northern Khmer), and among diaspora populations worldwide. Documents presented for translation in Australia typically originate from Cambodia's civil registry system, which was substantially rebuilt after the Khmer Rouge era, meaning records from before 1979 are frequently unavailable.
